About Michelle’s Practice:

I work with clients whose PTSD, anxiety, depression, and addictions were caused by past trauma, particularly relational trauma. My work is based on the fundamental belief that recovery is only possible if the underlying trauma is treated and resolved.

Relational trauma can occur when the actions of another violate the trust on which a relationship was built. The experience of profound and unexpected betrayal can be deeply traumatic and cause lasting changes in the areas of the brain responsible for regulating emotion, thought, and memory. This can happen when we are children, and it can happen when we are adults. When your brain is hijacked in this way, regaining control is difficult, no matter how long ago the betrayal occurred. Yet your brain is resilient, and so are you.

I practice EMDR, somatic approaches, DBT and other evidence-based therapies designed to take advantage of neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections in order to adapt and adjust to new situations, experiences, and environments.

Clients have mentioned that I am nonjudgmental, warm, and supportive. The technical term for mutual empathy is limbic resonance. When we experience limbic resonance, we feel emotionally attuned with another person. We feel seen, known, heard, and understood. I believe this exchange is the foundation for all trusting relationships, including good therapy.

In addition to my practice, I serve as the executive director at Bravely STL, a residential community for women who have survived lives of commercial sexual exploitation (trafficking and prostitution), violence and addiction. Located in the Old North neighborhood of St. Louis, we help women heal and rebuild their lives through free long-term housing, medical care, trauma therapy, education, and job readiness.
