By now, it should not be surprising that depression and obesity are not just correlational, but causational. One extensive studyon the two conditions found that obesity leads to a 55% increase in chances of developing depression. Meanwhile, having clinical depression leads to a 58% chance of becoming obese.
Treating one without treating the other is likely to end in failure. Thus, Dieticians are learning behavioral strategies to motivate stuck or depressed patients and Mental Health Professionals are incorporating weight management techniques into sessions. Psychiatrists are considering the impact of certain families of psychotropic medications on the patient’s weight management when prescribing anti-depressants. However, we need to be doing MORE!
In this month’s Elements of Wellness Workshop Series, we will be exploring ways of incorporating weight management techniques into mental health treatment sessions and behavioral interventions into dietary consultations.
